The illuminated letter or embellished letter is usually the first letter of a page or paragraph. It is an art form that can be seen as far back as Egyptian times but is mostly associated with manuscripts from the Middle Ages. These letters were often enhanced by the addition of animals, plants and mythological creatures.
I have created a modern day version of this old art form using oil pastels on colored paper.

I am a West Coast Canadian artist currently living in the Parksville area of Vancouver Island. Many of my paintings are inspired by life here with its profusion of birds, gardens, forests, wildlife and the ocean. Others are inspired by a combination of thoughts and memories, stories, travel, and my imagination. I work mainly with Oil Pastels. They allow me the freedom to combine line and color, and therefore serve as a drawing and a painting medium.
